Ikhfa in the Holy Quran

We learn the widest rule: fifteen letters leave the silent Noon between clear pronunciation and merging, with two counts of ghunnah.

What does Ikhfa mean?

Ikhfa means hiding the silent noon or tanween when the next letter is one of fifteen letters. The Noon is neither fully clear nor merged — it is between the two, with two counts of ghunnah.

Ikhfa has fifteen letters: ص ذ ث ك ج ش ق س د ط ز ف ت ض ظ. When a silent noon or tanween is followed by one of these letters, the Noon hides with ghunnah.

The silent noon is followed by an Ikhfa letter, so it hides with ghunnah.

No Ikhfaمِنْ عِلْمٍ

The silent noon is followed by a letter outside the fifteen, so Ikhfa does not apply.

Tanween sounds like a silent noon at the end of a noun. When joining words, check the first letter of the next word.

Noon SakinahAn original noon without a short vowel. It can occur inside or at the end of a word, as in أَنْعَمْتَ.
TanweenAn additional noon sound heard when connecting the end of a noun to the next word, but not written as a noon. Its signs are ـً ـٌ ـٍ.
