Stopping on Word Endings

Learn how the end of a word changes when you stop on it, at the end of a verse or to take a breath.

How does a word change when you stop?

There are three common cases where a word's ending changes when you stop on it; get to know them here.

Sukun

We silence the last voweled letter of the word, so its vowel becomes a sukun.

نَسْتَعِينُ ← نَسْتَعِينْ
Taa marbuta

Taa marbuta turns into a silent Haa when you stop on it.

الرَّحْمَةِ ← الرَّحْمَهْ
Tanween

Tanween drops when you stop, and a fathah tanween becomes an Alif that lengthens the word.

عَلِيمًا ← عَلِيمَا

Watch out: These rules apply only when you stop; when you keep reading, the word keeps its original vowel.

Look at the following words at the end of their verses and find the stopping rule for each:

الفاتحة — Verse 1

بِسْمِ

The end of the word takes a sukun when you stop.

البقرة — Verse 3

الصَّلَاةَ

The Taa marbuta becomes a silent Haa when you stop.

The tanween drops when you stop.
