Izhar in the Holy Quran

We learn here that Izhar occurs when one of the six throat letters comes after a silent noon or tanween.

What does Izhar mean?

Izhar means pronouncing a silent noon or tanween clearly when the next letter is one of the six throat letters: ء هـ ع ح غ خ. Do not merge the sounds or prolong the nasal sound.

Izhar is not just about the presence of a noon; the letter that follows it is the key. If it is one of the six throat letters, the noon is pronounced clearly.

Yes, Izharمِنْ عِلْمٍ

The silent noon is followed by ع, a throat letter.

No throat Izharمِنْ رَبِّهِمْ

The silent noon is followed by ر, which is not a throat letter.

Tanween sounds like a silent noon at the end of a noun. When joining words, check the first letter of the next word: عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ.

Noon SakinahAn original noon without a short vowel. It can occur inside or at the end of a word, as in أَنْعَمْتَ.
TanweenAn additional noon sound heard when connecting the end of a noun to the next word, but not written as a noon. Its signs are ـً ـٌ ـٍ.
